LEED and District Energy: What's New in the Guidelines? Why Does it Matter to me?

The USGBC has now released an new version of LEED, version 4.1. This is the first version to include the impacts of source energy on a project’s LEED application. This will also impact how district energy is accounted for in that application. Attendees will learn the latest and greatest relative to LEED and district energy and hear from Vicinity, owner of several district energy systems across the country on what they are hearing from their clients relative to LEED.

Attendees will: 

  • Understand how their district energy system impacts customers who want to seek a LEED certification.
  • Learn what customers are doing across the U.S. relative to LEED certification.

Speakers:

Tim Griffin
Tim Griffin, Executive Vice President, RMF Engineering, Inc.

Tim Griffin is IDEA’s liaison with the US Green Building Council and sat on IDEA’s Board of Directors for eleven years, serving as Chairman in 2016. He is also Executive Vice President for RMF Engineering, Inc., a firm specializing in the design and commissioning of district energy systems and has an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s in business administration. He is a registered engineer and LEED accredited professional. In addition, he authored the book Lattes, Puppies, and Unlimited Vacation, available through Design Leadership Press.

Gerard MacDonald, Principal, Reshape Infrastructure Strategies Ltd.

Gerard is a Principal with Reshape Strategies, a Vancouver-based energy and infrastructure consultancy. A Professional Engineer with a Master’s degree in Clean Energy Engineering, Gerard has fifteen years of experience in green buildings and district energy systems planning, design, project implementation, and policy development. Gerard has led and worked on projects across Canada from the concept development to operations and expansion phases. He is passionate about cities and climate issues.


Allison PorterAllison Porter, Director of Sales Operations, Vicinity Energy

Allison Porter is the Director of Sales Operations for Vicinity Energy and previously led the sales, marketing and customer service team for the Northeast Region for Veolia North America, supporting a portfolio of commercial and industrial district energy clients in the greater Boston area. She joined Veolia in 2009 as an Account Manager and previously worked as a Settlements Analyst at MATEP. Allison has a bachelor’s degree from Boston University and an MBA from Simmons University.
