Next-Generation Downtown District Energy Systems in the Greater Vancouver Area

When:  Apr 29, 2026 from 13:00 to 14:30 (ET)

This 90-minute webinar will feature presentations and a panel discussion with Q&A among district energy system owner/operators in the Vancouver area on how district energy systems are enabling decarbonization and optimization across a variety of settings through various technological approaches. This is Part Three in a multi-part series of free webinars on downtown decarbonization, hosted by the International District Energy Association (IDEA).

Presentations will include:

• How did a long-term partnership between a district energy company, a university, and a “community trust” facilitate the evolution from a small neighborhood system into a full district energy utility providing a economically viable, low-carbon solution?

• How is the City of North Vancouver using waste heat recovery, geothermal, and thermal solar in its municipally owned system to meet aggressive decarbonization goals, including its planned Urban Heat Recovery Centre?

• How will the district energy system at Thompson River University drastically reduce its GHG emission through a two-stage air source heat pump system which integrates with the existing building heating systems, without replacing the terminal units?

• How was the groundwork laid in Victoria’s Inner Harbour for what has become a proven, scalable approach to decarbonizing entire communities?

• How will the expansion of the City of Richmond’s district energy system be accomplished while ensuring that rates to customers remain low, that service to end-users remains robust and reliable, and that the system operator remains financially sustainable?

• How is the Burnaby Mountain District Energy Utility using wood waste-to-energy to avoid 12,000 tons of CO₂e annually?
