Adapting Existing Electrical Systems for Modern Microgrids

10-29-2018 15:19

Summary

Many electrical distribution systems, including those of district and campus systems, were designed and installed as simple radial networks. The protection deployed in these systems reflected their physical simplicity. In modern efforts to increase resilience and develop robust electrical distribution networks with adaptive protection settings, old systems require attention when configured to incorporate onsite generation, island operation or operate in new ways. Examples will highlight elements of systems to consider when developing a microgrid within existing electrical systems.
