A Capital Case for Microgrids

06-27-2019 11:25

Summary

Utility regulators in Washington, D.C. launched the Modernizing the Energy Delivery System for Increased Sustainability (“MEDSIS”) working group process to formulate recommendations for modernizing the city's electricity grid in furtherance of achieving climate and renewable energy goals. The MRC has been participating in the MEDSIS Microgrid Working Group. The District is a deregulated, unbundled, and partially decoupled jurisdiction. The MEDSIS recommendations and their follow-through may serve as a model framework for other deregulated jurisdictions to foster microgrid development. This session provided an update on MEDSIS status and microgrid development opportunities in the District. It also provided an overview of the master developer-lead microgrid project at the 66-acre redevelopment of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
