Combined Heat & Power with Spinning Reserve - Core of a Larger MicroGrid

11-09-2017 11:18

Summary

Microgrids balance electrical load to supply. Demand Reduction (DR) and Battery Storage (BS) have limitations when integrating intermittent and variable renewable wind & solar power.  For larger (10+ MW) microgrids, Combined Heat & Power with Spinning Reserve (CHP-SR) economically balances renewable power supply and complements DR and BS. This concept paper describes CHP-SR as a foundation of a microgrid, shows the economic value of thermal storage, estimates project investment and analyzes operating costs. It concludes by outlining elements (economic, technical, environmental, legal, structuring ) of CHP-SR centric microgrid project development.
