Like many universities, North Carolina State University’s (NCSU) on-going, essential campus expansion resulted in numerous unplanned modifications to the electrical distribution system. Safely aligning the resultant system for balancing load flow or facilitating equipment maintenance proved difficult. In an effort to “untangle the spaghetti,” NCSU holistically embarked upon a comprehensive electrical distribution master planning effort. This presentation explores system configuration (open-loop, closed-loop), switching method (automated, manual), feeder capacity, duct bank routing and redundancy options.
