Financial and Engineering Case Study: A Two-Sided Platform Business Model for Microgrids Using Existing CHP Facilities in Brookyn and Queens

11-09-2017 11:48

Summary

The presentation will introduce a power electronics platform for microgrid-to-macrogrid interconnection, communications and control and a real options microgrid financial optimization model.  Both use open source off-the-shelf technologies that have been peer-reviewed for IEEE publication.  Considering the interconnection of three large existing CHP plants in Brooklyn and Queens, financial projections will then be shown to prove that enabling ancillary services transactions in the new NYISO Behind-the-Meter Net Generation market results in net economic gains for microgrid developers and users and utility shareholders and rate payers.  Comparisons will be made for existing CHP facilities in Boston, Hartford, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington-DC, and Chicago.
