Integrating Solar Thermal and Biogas into an Innovative District Energy System Replacement

02-19-2020 15:17

Summary

UC Davis is designing a complete central heating and cooling plant replacement for their primate center campus, converting from steam to hot water and integrating a new solar thermal installation with 300 collectors via a water source heat pump plant with thermal storage. New boilers designed to utilize biogas from their adjacent landfill and biodigester facility will provide peaking capacity and backup service to the solar thermal plant. The plant will also provide an innovative approach to supply the significant process heating loads, minimizing carbon emissions and utilizing solar thermal to the extent possible.
