Discussion of a medium voltage distribution system upgrade for a Veterans Affairs Medical Center campus using automation integrated with protective relaying to provide a reliable, robust system. This approach is scalable and includes loop fault detection, fault isolation, loop restoration, and automatic load shedding/restoration. Our design uses a protective relay with a fast acting vacuum interrupter. This configuration has the ability to meet stringent utility interconnection requirements, such as fast islanding detection and reverse power.
