MRC Participates in California PUC Microgrid Workshop

12-12-2019 14:35

On Thursday, December 12, 2019, the Microgrid Resources Coalition participated in and presented at the California Public Utilities Commission R. 19-09-009 Microgrid Workshop in San Francisco California. The MRC outlined the immediate, near term, and long term solutions that California can deploy to enable microgrid development and deployment to achieve resilience and decarbonization goals and mitigate Public Safety Power Shutoff events.

The immediate and short term suggested solutions include, but are not limited to:

  • Removing arbitrary technical barriers to enable single and multi-customer microgrids
  • Removing financial barriers that make microgrid projects cost prohibitive to develop and construct including departing load charges, standby charges and interconnection costs.
In the longer term, California should focus on creating a resilience tariff; supporting hybrid microgrids; prioritizing microgrids as lower risk alternative for grid investment; and allowing microgrids to participate in wholesale markets as solutions to many of California's climate policy goals.

The agenda and additional presentation materials can be found on the CA PUC website here
