Overrunning Clutches Increase CHP Flexibility and Reduce Operating Cost

Summary

Self-synchronizing gear type overrunning clutches allow automatic disconnecting of a steam turbine from a running HP-LP, HP-IP-LP steam turbine or combined cycle train increasing CHP system flexibility and improving economics by eliminating the need of minimum steam flow through the turbine at times when all steam is required for process or heating. Pros and cons of various steam turbine arrangements, detailed economics, and clutch configurations will be presented along with other district energy clutch applications.
