Thane, 1st in India to have district cooling system under UNEP

Thane has been in the forefront of environment friendly initiatives and the city has now become the first in the country to have a district cooling system. It was selected by the UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) to implement centralised air conditioning to commercial structures like hospitals, malls, IT parks, townships which will cut down energy consumption by 40 to 50 percent.

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is responsible for the implementation of the district cooling system (DCS) in India. "This system is like piped gas where chilled water is circulated to the subscriber's air conditioners/chillers which generates cool air," says an official from the TMC's engineering department. "There is one centralised compressor which generates chilled water for distribution to air conditioners," he said.
