Ahmad Bin Shafar: The International District Energy Association plays a pivotal role in driving global efforts towards environmentally-friendly district cooling services and promoting green practices for governments and individuals. This comes in line with the strategy adopted by Empower

Dubai, UAE, 11th October 2018: Ahmad Bin Shafar, CEO of Empower, welcomed Rob Thornton, President and CEO of the International District Energy Association (IDEA), at Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower)’s head office, the world’s largest district cooling services provider. IDEA is the US-based international body for protecting the environment by relying on district cooling systems, which has been established since more than 100 years.

The visit, which is part of a tour to senior officials, by Ahmad Bin Shafar and Rob Thornton in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, aims to highlight the role of the International District Energy Association (IDEA) International District Cooling  Conference and Tradeshow in raising awareness of the importance of district cooling systems. Empower has won the opportunity to host the 8th IDEA Conference and Tradeshow  2018, which will be held from 9 to 11 December, 2018, at Atlantis The Palm, Dubai, under the slogan "Effective Energy for Smarter Cities."

The tour included visits to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) where they were welcomed by H.E Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and were welcomed by H.E Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Energy, during their visit to the Supreme Council of Energy and met H.E Dawood Al Hajiri, Director General of Dubai Municipality during their visit to the municipality. Bin Shafar and Thornton also traveled to Saudi Arabia, where they held meetings with senior officials from the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. The visit also included a meeting with senior officials of Johnson Controls, and a reception for the industry representatives.

“We are happy to welcome Mr. Thornton at Empower’s head office. IDEA pays special attention to our organisation for contributing to the success of the IDEA Conference and Tradeshow in Dubai, and for organising the Conference for 3 times in Dubai. This reflects our ability to organise and ensure the success of international events on district cooling, especially as Dubai is an incubator for major international events in various fields, including energy and environmental protection,” said Bin Shafar.

“IDEA plays a pivotal role in driving global efforts towards environmentally-friendly district cooling services and promoting green practices for governments and individuals. This comes in line with the strategy adopted by Empower, a global leader in district cooling systems, due to its innovative solutions that serve its well-defined organisational objectives. It also supports national sustainable development goals based on energy conservation and natural resource sustainability, by replacing conventional energy with clean energy sources, making Dubai the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050. Empower works to implement the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to reduce energy and water consumption by 30% by 2030,” continued Bin Shafar.

“I would like to thank Empower for its unlimited support to IDEA, especially for hosting the global conference twice in Dubai, and hosting it again this year. This conference will be an important platform for senior officials and decision-makers from public and private sectors, as well as experts working in the energy sector to discuss the latest developments, and offer solutions and innovative technologies in the district cooling industry,” said Thornton.

“I also commend Empower’s efforts in providing district cooling services according to the highest levels of efficiency and reliability, which established Dubai as a global hub for green practices. I had the opportunity to view various projects that Empower is currently undertaking, as well as its future aspirations. The district cooling sector is on the rise, thanks to Empower's efforts to encourage new venture investors to adopt energy-saving green buildings, and by their commitment to education and sharing the best practices to help other cities and communities in developing economies to plan and deploy district cooling as part of the United Nations Environment Program “District Energy in Cities Initiative.” added Thornton.

Empower currently operates over 1.34 Million RT, providing environmentally responsible district cooling services to large-scale real estate developments, such as Jumeirah Group, Jumeirah Beach Residence, Dubai International Financial Centre, Business Bay, Dubai Healthcare City, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Palm Jumeirah, Discovery Gardens, Ibn Battuta Mall, Dubai Design District and International Media Production Zone, among others.
