Summary
Salem is poised to receive $3 million from the Energy Trust of Oregon to help finance a cogeneration plant at the Willow Lake Water Pollution Control Facility.
Energy Trust's contribution, coupled with its previous $200,000 donation to the project and a $3 million grant from Portland General Electric, will help cover more than half of the $10.9 million project.
Facility upgrades will start January with an anticipated completion in late 2019 or early 2020.
Money from Energy Trust and PGE will pay for new equipment, a larger generator, electrical equipment and a methane gas conditioning system that removes contaminates prior to burning the gas, said Benjamin Haney, engineering program manager.
It also will pay for the cogeneration building, including capacity to expand, and add a second engine in the future.
