Summary
For many people the onset of winter brings the stark choice between heating their homes and putting food on the table.
But a new report suggests that fewer people in Dundee are facing such a tough decision – as levels of so-called fuel poverty are dropping.
Figures released by the city council have revealed that the number of households affected by fuel poverty – where 10% or more of income is spent on heating – has dropped from 42% to 35%.
The council says the installation of external cladding and district heating systems have led to a 20% reduction in bills for tenants, 81% of whom reported having warmer homes.
Three-quarters of tenants also said their homes stayed warmer for longer as a result.
However, the council has been warned it still needs to do more to bring down the cost of heating for residents.
