Eco-powered subways and electric buses to save 83,000 tons of CO2 every year
From January, Hamburg’s underground trains and electric buses are running on green electricity from new wind parks with Hamburg Energie continuing as the supplier. For years, Hamburg’s Hochbahn has been operating without electricity generated by coal or nuclear power. This power can now be calculated as part of the city’s climate plan. As a result of this measure alone, Hamburg will cut its CO2 emissions by 83,000 tons every year. Hochbahn currently uses as much electricity to power its transport as around 48,000 average households. The impetus for the measure came from the Climate-Partner agreement reached by the senate with 16 public sector companies last summer. The measure allows Hochbahn to attain Hamburg’s climate targets for 2020 (reducing CO2 emissions by 2 million tons by comparison with 2012).
