In 2008, Brown University in Providence, R.I., set an ambitious goal to reduce campus greenhouse gas emissions by 42 percent from 2007 levels by 2020. Ruth Simmons, the university’s president at the time, stated, “Brown is committed to doing our part to create a more sustainable environment. It is important to lead by example, taking action to preserve and protect the planet.”
