Summary
A climate emergency has been declared by Leeds City Council.
The council backed the bold declaration, with a majority vote, at a meeting on Wednesday, March 27 and set out a commitment to make Leeds carbon neutral by 2030.
The move was praised by Labour councillors, even though it appears to be at odds with some recent council decisions, such as facilitating the expansion of Leeds Bradford Airport.
Cllr Judith Blake, leader of the council, admitted that Leeds cannot tackle climate change alone, but said the city has 'the potential to make a big difference' and 'can lead by example'.
She said that councillors felt they had to take action after 1.4 million students around the world took part in strikes earlier this year, to call on their governments to tackle climate change.
