On a bluff southeast of downtown Pittsburgh, the Uptown neighborhood stretches along the Monongahela River. Once a busy commercial district, Uptown and the adjoining West Oakland community have become for many a pass-through corridor to and from downtown. That has begun to change, however. An enterprising plan is underway to transform Uptown/West Oakland into an EcoInnovation District – an initiative combining the environmental sustainability goals of an EcoDistrict with the economic opportunities of an Innovation District.
