GERMANY will begin a study to establish a reliable, long-term and sustainable supply chain for purchasing biomass from Namibia on a large scale.

In a statement issued by the Namibia Biomass Industry Group (N-BiG) on Tuesday, the group revealed that the prospective climate partnership between the two countries will be exploring how such a relationship can benefit all parties.

Namibia and Germany began discussing the potential of a biomass partnership in September last year, when a Namibian delegation of government officials, sector representatives, researchers and experts, and environmental non-governmental organisations attended a biomass conference in Germany.

Biomass is a renewable source of energy obtained from organic matter such as wood products, dried vegetation, and crop residues. Its emission levels are said to be significantly lower compared to fossil fuels.

In the statement, state councillor of the Hamburg Authority for Environment and Energy Michael Pollmann said the goal is to have as much added value as possible remain in Namibia, and as many local people as possible benefiting from the partnership.

“Energy from Namibian biomass could help us phase out coal faster for district heating. The condition for this is that a social and ecological balance is ensured across the entire supply chain,” he said.
