130 Geothermal Plants Operating in Europe

Summary

There were 130 geothermal electricity plants operating in Europe at the end of 2019, according to a report by the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC). The 'European Geothermal Market Report 2019' said that a further 36 projects were under development and another 124 in the planning phase.

In total, all the projects have a combined capacity of 3.3GW, EGEC said. The report added that the number of operating power plants, with base load, could double in the next five to eight years. EGEC said that Europe is a leading market for geothermal district heating and cooling systems with 5.5GWth of installed capacity in 25 countries in 2019.

The European geothermal heat pump market reached the milestone of 2 million heat pumps installed last year, it added. EGEC secretary general Philippe Dumas said: “Geothermal energy is sparking enthusiasm throughout Europe, and not only for heating and cooling in buildings and infrastructures, but also for industrial processes and agriculture. “New opportunities are arising with the extraction of sustainable geothermal lithium made in Europe.
