The University of Hull, the UK, said it has commissioned Siemens AG (ETR:SIE) to help it realise its ambition to become carbon neutral by 2027.
The German multinational has been tasked with conducting an evaluation of the university’s energy consumption and delivering a detailed masterplan for reducing emissions and incorporating renewables to power the campus.
The first steps to carbon neutrality were taken in late June, with the project set to deliver results by the university’s centenary anniversary in 2027.
The project will go through three phases. In the first one, called “reduce”, Siemens will examine the university’s current campus and energy consumption.
In the second phase, known as “produce”, the partners will explore technologies to produce renewable power for the campus, as well as methods that can be most effectively integrated into the current energy systems in order to cut carbon emissions.
The third phase will engage students and researchers in what will become a “living lab” on campus, a place that will create an opportunity to trial new technologies in a live environment.
Siemens will train several students of the masters programme in energy engineering, who will then conduct research to support the creation of the masterplan, the University of Hull said.
