Empower reduces $13m in district cooling consumption bills

UAE-based district cooling services provider Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) has revealed its readiness to implement the directives of the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to increase the percentage of renewable and clean energy in the Dubai's energy mix.

The announcement also coincides with the decision issued by the chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, to reduce the additional fuel surcharge for electricity and water.

The reduction in the additional fuel surcharge on electricity and water will benefit more than 140,000 Empower customers. The total annual reduction in district cooling charges for the company’s customers is estimated at more than $13m (AED48m), according to data from December 1, 2020.

All customer segments, including master developers, owners, and end-users can reap the advantage of the reduction in district cooling consumption bills across all types of projects where Empower provides its services, including residential buildings, commercial buildings, shopping centres, hospitals, and schools, among others.

Commenting on the initiative, the chief executive officer of Empower and chairman of the District Cooling Operators Association, Ahmad Bin Shafar, said: “The immediate gains of the decisions taken by Dubai’s wise leadership are reflected in increased comfort for the residents of Dubai, reducing their living expenses, and reaching the highest levels of satisfaction and happiness.”

Bin Shafar added that the decision is also likely boost demand for district cooling in existing and upcoming projects, as it is an environmentally friendly solution and the fastest system to guarantee sustainability as it contributes to huge savings in energy for cooling.
