Summary

The toilet waste of almost 80,000 Buddies is to keep boffins and medical experts warm at Renfrewshire’s new innovation district.

The treated sludge reaches a heat of 30C and would normally be fired out into the White Cart Water in Paisley.

Instead plans are in place to redirect that heat along a one mile pipe from the LaighPark Water Treatment Works at the end of Abercorn Street.

The “District Heating Network” powered by poo will be the first of its kind in Scotland and is said to be an “exciting opportunity.”

Heat produced by the excrement will waft downstream, crossing the river to reach the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District (AMIDS).

A contract out to tender reveals the £65 million National Manufacturing Institute - see model below - and the £56 million Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre are first to be hooked up to the new heat source.

The vast site, previously farmland, stretches between the river and Abbotsinch Road to Renfrew.

The pipe system is likely to be extended to other buildings not yet confirmed and could even be extended to the former Chivas whisky site.

The “neighbourhood ambient loop” enters premises where heat pumps upgrade it for heating and hot water.
