Summary

A 50MW heat pump, said to be the world’s largest CO2-refrigerant-based seawater heat pump, is to be supplied to a district heating plant under construction in Esbjerg.

Swiss company MAN Energy Solution AG will supply the 50MW seawater heat pump to Danish utility services supplier DIN Forsyning. It will be the backbone of the Danish company’s replacement of a coal-fired plant at the Port of Esbjerg, and will supply heating to almost 100,000 inhabitants of Esbjerg, Varde and Nordby.

A 60MW thermal chip-fired boiler, supplied by Finnish KPA Unicon Oy, will work alongside the seawater heat pump.

The seawater heat pump and the wood chip plant are both scheduled for commissioning on 1 April 2023, when the coal-powered plant stops production.
