Summary

German energy supplier MVV Energie AG (ETR:MVV1) will procure between 240 GWh and 350 GWh of heat per year from a geothermal plant that will be built by Vulcan Energy Ressources (ETR:VUL) near the city of Mannheim, southwest Germany.

The contracted heat will be transferred from Vulcan’s planned geothermal wells via heating grids and underground pipes that deliver hot water or steam to buildings in the city. It will be enough to cover the consumption of between 25,000 and 35,000 households in Mannheim.

For the southwest German city, the cooperation with Vulcan is a milestone on the way to climate neutrality. MVV Energie, which has its head office in Mannheim, has just launched the construction of a 20-MW heat pump on the Rhine river in the city that is expected to supply heating for 3,500 households from 2023 onwards.

About 30% of the district heating supplied by MMV Energie to Mannheim and the region comes from renewable energy and the complete transition to green district heating is targeted by 2030. The company sees potential for at least 500 MW of geothermal capacity on the Rhine and Neckar rivers in Mannheim alone.
