OPINION PIECE: Due to the current geopolitical situation, all energy-related themes should also be seen in the context of the war in Ukraine. The European Union, as a community based on sound ethical principles, should pay particular attention to moral values. That is why the directions of energy policy, especially in the field of energy carriers and energy sources, should be determined in a highly responsible manner. Let a diversified energy mix and a wide range of energy supply directions be our weapon, a new recognition symbol of the EU.

The role of district heating

Replacement of old, inefficient household heating sources should be prioritized. One way is to install new individual heating sources with the lowest possible emissions, but there is also an alternative solution which can be provided by the energy sector. An attractive and effective option is district heating.

We need to remember that district heating is based on heating plants and combined heat and power plants, which must meet strict environmental requirements set by the EU law. It is a very effective technology, dedicated mostly for urbanized areas. Therefore, covering heating needs should be done primarily through the use of district heating, wherever possible. This model ensures the high efficiency of fuel use, improves the living standard of citizens and reduces the problem of near-ground emissions. It is worth mentioning that there is a well-developed district heating system in Poland – approximately 40% of households are connected to district heating networks.
