As Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) readies to open its new state-of-the-art medical intensive care unit (MICU) this summer, followed by the unveiling of a newly constructed 35,000-square-foot Emergency Department in the fall, the hospital administration has carefully detailed all the patient-centered amenities, showing off private rooms, oversized surgical suites and many modern technologies during a recent preview tour. But one of the most innovative improvements to the RUMC campus is a feature that patients will never physically see: A new self-sufficient, onsite cogeneration energy plant that will offer a cost-effective, environmentally friendly and renewable way to power the property.

The Co-Gen plant, slated to run on natural gas and produce enough electricity to power the hospital daily -- even in the event of an area power failure -- should be operational sometime this month, Messina said. The power station use will allow RUMC to generate electricity and useful heat at the same time with the excess generated heat utilized to create improved air conditioning capacity for the hospital.
