Summary

Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions has completed a renewable energy project, combining solar and storage, at the campus of Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYU-Hawaii) in Laie on the island of Oahu.

The project includes three rooftop solar arrays, five solar carports and 7,324.8 kWh of battery storage using Tesla Megapacks. It is expected to produce 6.37 MWh a year, sufficient to cover 39% of the university's energy needs, Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions, which is a nonregulated commercial brand of Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK), said on Thursday.

Duke Energy Sustainable Solutions designed and constructed the system and has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the university.

The project will reduce BYU-Hawaii's environmental impact and its reliance on the local grid.

"The combination of solar and battery storage is a smart solution that will allow us to support our students and their education more sustainably by potentially saving the university over USD 20 million in utility costs over the system's life," said operations vice president Kevin Schlag.
