In 2012, microgrids gained sudden national awareness after the incredibly destructive Hurricane Sandy cut power to millions throughout the Northeast—that is, of course, except for small pockets of communities with backup light and heat available through microgrids. These localized power grids were disconnected from the traditional grid and continued to operate independently through the storm, ensuring safety and a sense of comfort for those benefiting.

A decade later, even though the benefits of microgrids have been repeatedly demonstrated in such situations, adoption still isn’t widespread.
