Greater Golden Horseshoe Businesses Discuss Reaching Net Zero at Innovation Summit

Various decision-makers from across the Greater Golden Horseshoe region came together to discuss the effects of decarbonization on the economy as a key summit returned in person after two years.

The fifth edition of Canada’s Innovation Corridor Summit (CICS) — hosted by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce this year — invited members of businesses, infrastructure, researchers, regional government and transportation to dive into the “challenges and economic opportunities of Net-Zero,” the June 29 summit agenda said.

Here are some of the innovations and panel discussions shared:

Net-zero thermal corridor for Hamilton: In a panel discussion, Jeff Cowan, CEO of Hamilton Community Enterprises, and Julia Langer CEO of The Atmospheric Fund, discussed the importance of heat networks in decarbonization. Cowan told The Spectator, that low residual heat from infrastructure is “the largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.”

Cowan said that his company is working to use residual thermal energy to heat 80 million square feet of property.

“We want to capture (that waste),” and use it to carry hot water into buildings, for the heating systems.
