Summary

Seattle Central College will become the new home for an EcoDistrict. System strategies will generate 160-degree heating for the water supply. This is achieved through pumps and this system works without the need to remove any existing hot water coils or HVAC systems.

Furthermore, the EcoDistrict will create a shared energy standard for buildings. The goal? Eliminate unnecessary waste and achieve zero-carbon efficiency. Students at the college will learn about sustainability and use it to build a better future. In addition, the EcoDistrict is also a living laboratory where students will solve problems and brainstorm new strategies for solving the world’s environmental problems.

“We expect the EcoDistrict to be the linchpin of switching away from fossil-fuel generated heating and cooling,” said Lincoln Ferris, Seattle Central College interim vice president of administrative services.

“The climate, affordability and equity crises deserve our time, focus and creative solutions,” said McKinstry President and Chief Market Officer Ash Awad. “Seattle Colleges is stepping out in front, embracing its role as leader, educator and innovator, setting in motion changes that empower the organization, its students and the communities the colleges are part of to work collectively to find solutions for society’s most challenging problems.” The college collaborated with McKinstry to create an innovative, eco-friendly design.
