Summary

Findings from the government-appointed ‘Hydrogen Champion’ have called for a decision to be made this year on whether to begin blending the gas into networks.

Jane Toogood, who was appointed the UK’s first Hydrogen Champion last year, made the recommendation in a new report for looking at the opportunities and market barriers to expanding hydrogen generation as part of the country’s energy decarbonisation plans.

The calls for a decision on blending of the gas is one of a number of recommendations made in the report for UK authorities to consider when planning its future Hydrogen Strategy. These plans will look at how the gas might be best used as a lower carbon source of energy that can be safely and sustainably used in different purposes such as industrial heat.

The UK Government has committed to take a decision in 2026 on whether it will back the use of hydrogen for the purposes of domestic heat alongside technologies that are already on the market such as heat pumps and lower carbon district heating solutions.

Any decision from the government is expected to be based on a series of upcoming trials focused on distributing and using a 100 per cent supply of hydrogen in homes.
