Summary
The UofA’s first major-scale project to reach carbon neutrality by 2040, a 25-acre solar farm, is expected to be operational by next summer.
The array of solar panels is a part of a solar services agreement predicted to cut UA greenhouse gas emissions by 8.8% over the next 25 years. UA System President Donald Bobbitt signed the renewable energy agreement July 18, 2020. During its span, it is projected to save the university $3.1 million, according to the Office for Sustainability.
“When you look at our campus carbon footprint, about 50% of it is coming from the electricity that we use on campus,” UA director of sustainability Eric Boles said, “so we really wanted to use production of renewable energy to get us in the game.”
