Summary

UM’s sustainability director, Eva Rocke, said that for too long, the University has had a substantial carbon footprint. A new power plant was needed to offset that. 

In November 2021, the University broke ground on the new system: a combined heat and power plant. The new plant will harness the excess steam and use it to generate electricity. If operating as planned, the University can keep the lights on, even in a full-city power outage.

With this model, the University should become more economically independent.

“The University of Montana buys all of our electricity from Northwestern Energy,” Rocke said. “This project is a big step forward for us in onsite energy generation.”
