Summary
Construction has begun once again on the Oberlin College campus as it continues to work toward energy-saving improvements through infrastructure changes.
The $80 million project of becoming carbon neutral while modernizing its infrastructure has been ongoing since 2021 and is expected to conclude in 2025.
The Sustainable Infrastructure Program work has three main components which include conversion of the heating and cooling source from the aging traditional energy system to a geothermal system; replacing the deteriorating steam and chilled water pipes with new hot water and chilled water pipes; and retrofitting campus buildings to accommodate the new energy system and equip approximately 11 more buildings with air conditioning, the website stated.
In May, geothermal bore drilling will begin on the north side of the campus, the website stated.
"Distribution and building conversion work this year will be focused in the area north of West Lorain Street, between Woodland Street and North Professor Street, and extending across Professor to some buildings on the east side of the street," the information stated. "Another big milestone this year will be the installation of a heat recovery chiller in the Central Services Building."
