Summary
An EU-wide consultation has been launched with the aim to further accelerate heat pump use in Europe by overcoming current installation barriers.
The proposals have been set out in line with aims to reduce Europe’s reliance on fossil fuels as a source of power for heating and cooling functions. They also call for firm commitments to be introduced that would end the installation of standalone fossil fuel heating systems such as natural gas boilers during the current decade in favour of lower carbon technologies such as heat pumps and hybrid systems.
The final consideration in the conclusion is a call for ‘accessible financing’ to encourage the increased installation of heat pumps both in individual properties as well as for district heating solutions. One major area for funding would be in the case of lower oncome households and individuals at risk of fuel poverty. An action plan that is expected to be produced in response to the consultation will look at the opportunities for whole-energy-system renovations that would see more integrated energy-upgrade projects undertaken in buildings.
