In a press conference, the Prime Minister for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, Manuela Schwesig, stated the aim of making the region a model for the use of geothermal energy to heat homes. To this end, a model outline will soon be submitted to the federal government.
This proclamation follows the successful commissioning of a geothermal heating plant in Schwerin a few months ago. This landmark district heating project supplies clean and renewable heat 2000 households, or about 15% of the district heating customers in Schwerin. An investment of EUR 20.5 million went into the project.
Geothermal energy has been used for heat generation for many years in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, particularly in Neubrandenburg, Neustadt-Glewe and Waren (Müritz). Earlier this year, plans were announced for the expansion of the combined geothermal heat and power plant in Neustadt-Glewe. Further projects are in the planning stage.
