We've covered the former underground pedestrian tunnel near Marquette. And now we're digging into downtown Milwaukee's network of tunnels and buried pipes, some of which date to the 1890s, that's used to run steam to heat buildings and produce hot water.

So, what the heck is down there? What's it like in the tunnels under some of our busiest streets? And how can this ancient network still be viable?

In June, Ted Sniegowski, manger of District Energy the We Energies unit that runs the steam system, invited us into the 3.5-mile tunnel network for a look-see.
