The University of Windsor took a big step towards reaching its net-zero emissions goals Wednesday with the introduction of a hybrid steam-electric system for its heating and cooling needs that will reduce greenhouse gases by 8,300 tonnes each year and generate savings of $1 million annually.

The university’s current natural gas-powered co-generation system uses about 13 million cubic feet of natural gas annually. The hybrid system is expected to reduce usage by between four and five million cubic feet.

The resulting reduction in greenhouse gas emissions will be the equivalent to taking 2,000 cars off the road each year. The hybrid system is forecast to account for achieving 82 per cent of the university’s emission goals by 2030.

“We’ll only use our gas utility when we have a high peak usually in the summer months,” said project manager Dan Castellan.

“Even when we do use gas to drive the engine, we’ll use it less. We used to run it 24/7 for the last 25 years. Now, it might be 140 hours for the whole year.”
