Summary
Scientists from the Georesearch Center in Potsdam are evaluating the subsurface in Adlershof, Berlin for an aquifer thermal storage project. The project aims to stabilize the energy supply from a heat pump facility run by district heating provider BTB in the Schöneweide area. The heat pumps currently extract heat from the Spree river and feed it into the Berlin district heating network, but the system generates excess energy in the summer and too little in the winter.
Aquifer thermal storage is the proposed solution to store excess energy during the summer and make it available during the winter. Test drilling has revealed the presence of suitable sandstone at a depth of 450 meters for water storage. The water would be kept warm at hundreds of meters underground, relying on specific types of rock for the system to work properly.
The Adlershof thermal storage facility will take a few years to complete and initially have limited capacity, supplying enough energy for around 3000 households over a winter season
