Tralee is a prime location for district heating

Seán Kelly, MEP for Ireland South, has stressed the critical importance of district heating as a key solution to bolster Ireland’s renewable energy transition - with Tralee cited as a location with huge potential.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting, “Decarbonising Cork with District Energy”, in the Clayton Hotel in Cork City last week Kelly underlined the urgent need for Ireland to accelerate its renewable energy efforts and learn from the successes of other European countries.

“Ireland is uniquely positioned to exploit offshore wind to produce renewable energy as part of the wider global energy transition. Although we are making strides in renewable energy generation and decarbonising the energy system, the necessary major upscaling of our renewable generation capacity is still some years away” stated Kelly.

District heating emerged as a tangible option for decarbonizing Ireland’s heating sector in Kelly’s statement.

He pointed out that “district heating not only strengthens renewable energy integration but also serves as an energy storage solution, fortifies energy security, and brings substantial financial savings for consumers and households alike”.
