Summary

Findings call for the complete subsidisation of heat pumps for a third of UK homes, while rejecting the case for using hydrogen as a source of domestic heat

A major review by the UK’s National Infrastructure Commission calls for the government to scale up funding for the electrification of domestic heat. It also has called for improved financial support to connect more homes in the country to district heating networks.

The oversight body, which provides independent scrutiny of the UK’s infrastructure needs, said it viewed “electrification as the only viable option for decarbonising buildings at scale” to help reduce energy costs and the use of fossil fuels such as natural gas for heating.
