University of Montana heating plant upgrade to reduce emissions, save millions

An upgrade to the University of Montana’s heating plant is set to revolutionize the university’s energy system.

For more than two years, workers have chipped away on the new combined heat and power plant. Now, they’re just months away from bringing the project online, which is expected to slash university emissions and save millions of dollars.

“Overall, we’re looking at about a 30% reduction in our total greenhouse gas emissions footprint from that change, so that’s the context of this project as far as our sustainability goals are concerned,” said Eva Rocke, the university’s sustainability director.

Next door to the new plant is a century-old building that houses the university’s current heating plant.
