Summary

A 1GW green hydrogen production facility planned for Esbjerg, Denmark, has received environmental approval, bringing the H2 Energy Europe project closer to final investment decision (FID).

The facility plans to utilise 1GW of Plug Power PEM electrolysers, powered by offshore wind, to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year from 2028.
Hydrogen produced at the Esbjerg site is intended for use in the energy and transportations sector in northern Europe, as well as a chemical feedstock for e-fuel production.

Furthermore, excess heat produced from the site is hoped to potentially supply “the majority” of households in Esbjerg with district heating.
