The Office of the President of the Republic of Finland has reduced its carbon footprint by 55.4%. The reference year is 2016, when the Office renewed its environmental plan and committed itself to the objectives outlined in the Society’s Commitment to Sustainable Development. The biggest reductions were achieved in the emissions from purchased energy, as the Office’s all premises shifted to using electricity, district heating and cooling produced from renewable energy sources.

The Office set as its target to reduce its carbon footprint to less than one third at the initiative of President Sauli Niinistö in 2018. The deadline for achieving the target was set at the end of his presidential term in February 2024. The aim was to reduce the Office’s emissions not only in total, but also in all areas of operations. President Niinistö has stressed that it is necessary to take action at every level to combat climate change.
