£2.5m deal for heat pump at Liverpool Waters that will use canal water to help keep homes warm

The developers of an energy network that will extract heat from canal water to power thousands of homes have signed a £2,5m heat pump deal.

The Mersey Heat Energy Centre is currently under construction at Princes Dock in Liverpool as part of Peel Waters’ Liverpool Waters regeneration scheme. It’s being led by district heat network specialist Ener-Vate and being built by Vital Energi.

Now Peel has announced it has signed a £2.5m deal with Star Refrigeration for a water source heat pump. The equipment is being made in Glasgow and will be supplied in the summer, allowing the network to start operating in winter. It will use heat extracted from the Leeds-Liverpool Canal to provide low carbon energy to homes and businesses via a 6km district heating network.

Homes and businesses will be able to connect into the existing district heating pipework which has already been installed.
