Summary

The University of Oldenburg has implemented an energy-saving measure which aims to set a benchmark for new buildings and renovations at other universities, and is now one of the few universities in Germany that recovers waste heat from components of its data centre. The measure is part of the project WärmewendeNordwest (Heat Transition Northwest) funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and headed by Oldenburg energy informatics scientist Prof. Dr Sebastian Lehnhoff. The project involves the installation of several innovative cooling and heating systems which will then be intelligently interconnected via smart control strategies to reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions. The goal is to utilize energy more efficiently and develop solutions that can be transferred to other universities at the same time.
