Summary

With the arrival of the long-anticipated Paris 2024 Olympics, the French capital city has placed sustainable and local district heating and cooling projects in the spotlight.

There are several notable examples utilising efficient and clean heating and cooling networks to supply citizens:

  • A new district heating network began operating in October 2023 ahead of the games for the Olympic Games Village. This project taps into geothermal shallow water to both heat and cool residential and service buildings via heat pumps, based on a 68% share of renewable energy.
  • Olympic venues such as the Grand Palais are being supplied with ambient cooling using water from the Seine River. This initiative, based on the expansion of the city’s urban cooling system, aims to curtail projected rising demands for air conditioning, while cutting carbon emissions.
  • Data centres are also helping to heat essential locales, such as the Olympic training pool, and key Parisian districts using waste heat supplied through district heating networks.

These projects showcase the enormous potential of district heating and cooling to provide essential cooling and heating to urban environments and buildings, even sizeable undertakings such as Olympic infrastructure.

In light of the success of these initiatives, we must look towards future district heating and cooling solutions to facilitate more cost-effective and sustainable projects.
