Snowbird Power Systems, an energy-efficient cogeneration plant, creates massive efficiencies and reliability, winning the honorable mention award for cleantech, energy, and sustainability. It generates most of the resort’s power while recycling waste heat. The plant uses combined heat and power systems to boost electrical efficiency by 60 percent and save an estimated 62,000 dekatherms of natural gas annually. As the first ski resort in North America to utilize such a system, the new facility was forced to innovate beyond existing cogeneration plants in other industries due to Snowbird’s alpine environment.
